Viking Poems on War and Peace: A Study in Skaldic Narrative by R. G. Poole

Viking Poems on War and Peace: A Study in Skaldic Narrative by R. G. Poole
English | Sep 30, 1991 | ISBN: 0802058671, 0802067891 | 242 Pages | PDF | 10.9 MB

The Old Norse and Icelandic poets have left us vivid accounts of conflict and peace-making in the Viking Age. Russell G. Poole’s editorial and critical analysis reveals much about the texts themselves, the events that they describe, and the culture from which they come.
Poole attempts to put right many misunderstandings about the integrity of the texts and their narrative techniques. From a historical perspective, he weighs the poems’ authenticity as contemporary documents which provide evidence bearing upon the reconstruction of Viking Age battles, peace negotiations, and other events.
He traces the social roles played by violence in medieval Scandinavian society, and explores the many functions of the poet within that society. Arguing that these texts exhibit a mind-style so vastly different from our own present ‘individualism,’ Poole suggests that the mind-set of the medieval Scandinavian could be termed ‘non-individualist.’
The poems discussed are the ‘Darradarljód,’ where the speakers are Valkyries; ‘Lidsmannaflokkr,’ a rank-and-file warrior’s description of Canute the Great’s siege of London in 1016; ‘Torf-Einarr’s Revenge'; ‘Egil’s Duel with Ljótr,’ five verses from the classic Egils saga Skallagrimssonar; ‘A Battle on the Health,’ marking the culmination of a famous feud described in a very early Icelandic saga, the Heidarviga saga; and two extracts from the poem Sexstefia, one describing Haraldr of Norway’s great fleet and victory over Sveinn of Denmark, and the other the peace settlement between these two kinds.
The texts are presented in association with translations and commentaries as a resource not merely for medieval Scandinavian studies but also for the increasingly interwoven specialisms of literary theory and anthropology.

ISO22301 - A Pocket Guide

ISO22301 – A Pocket Guide by Tony Drewitt
English | May 19, 2015 | ASIN: B00XYFSCR6 | 42 Pages | EPUB/MOBI | 132.07 KB/169.57 KB

How would your organisation continue operating in the event of a crisis? If you were hit by a cyber attack and lost the use of your IT systems, would you be able to carry on? If your business premises were forced to close, what would you do? If you were affected by unexpected staff absence, how could you reassure your customers that you could still offer them the service they expected?
If your organisation is affected by any of these issues and you’re unprepared, then the financial and reputational damage you face could prove disastrous. You could fail to keep up with customer demand, lose important business, and your customers could go elsewhere. Without a proper risk assessment strategy, your company directors could even face prosecution if a major incident occurs and results in loss or injury.
An introduction to ISO22301
To minimise the impact of a disaster on your business, and to continue to provide essential services to your customers, you need to put in place a Business Continuity Management System (BCMS).
ISO22301: A Pocket Guide is designed to help you satisfy the requirements of ISO22301, the latest international Standard for business continuity management (BCM). A BCMS based on ISO22301 will protect your organisation’s turnover, profits and reputation. With the expert advice contained in this guide, you can ensure your organisation develops a business continuity plan that is fit for purpose, and ensure your continuing service when disaster strikes.
Learn how to build your Business Continuity Management System (BCMS)
•Plan and manage a BCMS. If you are going to have a proper BCMS you will need to make business continuity a formal project. This pocket guide gives you valuable tips on how to draw up the BCM policy and establish the BCMS project, along with basic guidance on conducting a business impact analysis.
•Secure your licence to operate. Organisations such as law firms now have to put in place a BCMS in order to obtain a licence to operate.
•Retain your competitive edge. Organisations are beginning to seek formal assurance that their suppliers will be able to continue supplying them in the event of an interruptive incident. If you are a supplier, having a BCMS certified to ISO22301 represents a significant competitive advantage.
•Satisfy corporate governance concerns. A well-run company will have a strong corporate governance framework. Business continuity planning is a basic requirement of corporate governance.
Expert ISO22301 guidance

Matzah-pated! 10 Tips to Prevent Constipation from Eating Too Many Matzahs. If you like pizza, bread, crackers, rice cakes, bagels or Matzah, you will like and benefit from reading Matzah-pated. Preventing constipation is everyone’s business.
Everyone loves Matzahs!
I don’t eat bread regularly, but when Matzah season comes around, there is some excitement in eyeballing those big beautiful squares and Haas avocados lurking nearby. I’m certain to have at least one of my favorite Michele the Trainer Hillel sandwiches per season (the recipe is in the book).
The Scoop on Poop:
For your health, regularity has been a topic of concern and conversation for many years. The benefits of regularity align pooping with mental focus, creativity, and clarity. Pooping daily is VERY IMPORTANT.
Whether you’re Kosher, on a special diet, entertaining, preparing for holidays, Passover, Pesach, your Seder or other special occasions, Jewish, in, from or love Israel, or you just a foodie who loves Matzahs, we hope you enjoy this little book.

The Alchemy of Air: A Jewish Genius, a Doomed Tycoon, and the Scientific Discovery

Thomas Hager, “The Alchemy of Air: A Jewish Genius, a Doomed Tycoon, and the Scientific Discovery That Fed the World but Fueled the Rise of Hitler”
ISBN: 0307351785, 0307351793 | 2008 | EPUB/PDF | 336 pages | 400 KB/2 MB

A sweeping history of tragic genius, cutting-edge science, and the discovery that changed billions of lives—including your own.
At the dawn of the twentieth century, humanity was facing global disaster. Mass starvation, long predicted for the fast-growing population, was about to become a reality. A call went out to the world’s scientists to find a solution.
This is the story of the two enormously gifted, fatally flawed men who found it: the brilliant, self-important Fritz Haber and the reclusive, alcoholic Carl Bosch. Together they discovered a way to make bread out of air, built city-sized factories, controlled world markets, and saved millions of lives. Their invention continues to feed us today; without it, more than two billion people would starve.
But their epochal triumph came at a price we are still paying. The Haber-Bosch process was also used to make the gunpowder and high explosives that killed millions during the two world wars. Both men were vilified during their lives; both, disillusioned and disgraced, died tragically. Today we face the other unintended consequences of their discovery—massive nitrogen pollution and a growing pandemic of obesity.
The Alchemy of Air is the extraordinary, previously untold story of two master scientists who saved the world only to lose everything and of the unforseen results of a discovery that continues to shape our lives in the most fundamental and dramatic of ways.

Ashley's War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield

Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, “Ashley’s War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield”
ISBN: 006233381X | 2015 | EPUB | 320 pages | 1 MB

From the author of the New York Times bestseller The Dressmaker of Khair Khana comes the poignant and gripping story of a groundbreaking team of female American warriors who served alongside Special Operations soldiers on the battlefield in Afghanistan—including Ashley White, a beloved soldier who died serving her country’s cause.
In 2010, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command created Cultural Support Teams, a pilot program to put women on the battlefield alongside Green Berets and Army Rangers on sensitive missions in Afghanistan. The idea was that women could access places and people that had remained out of reach, and could build relationships—woman to woman—in ways that male soldiers in a conservative, traditional country could not. Though officially banned from combat, female soldiers could be “attached” to different teams, and for the first time, women throughout the Army heard the call to try out for this special ops program.
In Ashley’s War, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon uses exhaustive firsthand reporting and a finely tuned understanding of the complexities of war to tell the story of CST-2, a unit of women hand-picked from across the Army, and the remarkable hero at its heart: 1st Lt. Ashley White, who would become the first Cultural Support Team member killed in action and the first CST remembered on the Army Special Operations Memorial Wall of Honor alongside the Army Rangers with whom she served.
Transporting readers into this little-known world of fierce women bound together by valor, danger, and the desire to serve, Ashley’s War is a riveting combat narrative and a testament to the unbreakable bonds born of war.
Gayle Tzemach Lemmon is a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a contributor to The Atlantic’s Defense One. She is the bestselling author of The Dressmaker of Khair Khana and writes regularly for leading media outlets. A Fulbright scholar and Robert Bosch Fellow, she began reporting from conflict regions during MBA study at the Harvard Business School following nearly a decade covering politics at ABC News.

Many people choose to go vegetarian or vegan for the health benefits this lifestyle has to offer. While it is possible for a vegan to eat unhealthy foods (such as eating foods made with trans fats or foods with sugar and salt), by and large most vegans and vegetarians have healthier diets. It isn’t possible to get fiber through meat or dairy products, but vegetarians usually eat lots more fiber than their meat-eating counterparts. Furthermore, cholesterol comes from eating animal products, and people who eat less or no animal-based foods will benefit from this diet. Finally, overall, vegetarians and especially vegans usually weigh less than people who eat meat.
This book offers you the Top 10 Vegan recipes carefully selected by Vegan lovers!

In 1978 just months before my first book “Your Healing Hands” was released, I experienced a first in a series of life-shocks that forever changed my life. While I could hardly believe what I was witnessing, I could not look away or deny what was before me. I attended a workshop taught by Robert Rasmusson. This was the first time he ever showed a group of people a method of hands-on healing that he had intuitively discovered in 1948.

Bob (as he liked to be called) discovered this work when he was visiting a young child with a severe case of bowed legs; she would come home crying because the other kids teased her. Asking what he could do to help, he was guided to use body awareness and breathing techniques. Rasmusson then touched the girl’s knees and the bowed legs immediately straightened out. The girl cried out, Mommy, I can touch my knees together.
What Will You Learn?
A series of breathing and body awareness exercises to help you focus and amplify life-force energy.
This is the core technique that is used in Quantum-Touch. It is so easy and natural to learn, we’ve had little children and great grandparents pick it up easily. I’m sure that you will too.

How to bring down pain and inflammation in record time.
All by itself, this is an invaluable skill. It seems that there are always people in pain and it is a blessing to have something you can do to really help.

You can absolutely observe bones automatically adjusting themselves with a light touch.
Actually, the body moves them into correct alignment. You don’t have to figure it out any more than you need to understand how you digest your breakfast. This may well be the easiest as well as the most effective way to reduce or eliminate back pain.

How to help reduce or eliminate back pain and get faster and better results than you have ever thought possible
We have dozens of chiropractors that are now using Quantum-Touch because it is so effective.

How to use an extraordinary distant healing method to get truly outstanding results.
When those you love are not near and you want to help, don’t feel helpless because there is something significant you can do. Distant healing with Quantum-Touch is tremendously effective.

How to amplify the power of your sessions by work with Chakras, Toning and Vortexing the life-force energy.
This truly ups the power of your sessions tremendously.

How to use the Amplified Resonance Technique to turbo charge your own sessions so they have a power similar to a group sessions.
This is the most powerful technique presented in the book, video or basic workshop. This allows individuals to run energy as if they were a whole group of people.

How to work with pets and other animals.
It’s a great joy to use this work with animals as they usually respond amazingly quick.

Kennewick Man: The Scientific Investigation of an Ancient American Skeleton

Kennewick Man: The Scientific Investigation of an Ancient American Skeleton (Peopling of the Americas Publications) by Douglas W. Owsley and Richard L. Jantz
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1623492009 | 680 pages | PDF | 28 MB

Almost from the day of its accidental discovery along the banks of the Columbia River in Washington State in July 1996, the ancient skeleton of Kennewick Man has garnered significant attention from scientific and Native American communities as well as public media outlets. This volume represents a collaboration among physical and forensic anthropologists, archaeologists, geologists, and geochemists, among others, and presents the results of the scientific study of this remarkable find. Scholars address a range of topics, from basic aspects of osteological analysis to advanced ?research focused on Kennewick Man’s origins and his relationships to other populations. Interdisciplinary studies, comprehensive data collection and preservation, and applications of technology are all critical to telling Kennewick Man’s story.
Kennewick Man: The Scientific Investigation of an Ancient American Skeleton is written for a discerning professional audience, yet the absorbing story of the remains, their discovery, their curation history, and the extensive amount of detail that skilled scientists have been able to glean from them will appeal to interested and informed general readers. These bones lay silent for nearly nine thousand years, but now, with the aid of dedicated researchers, they can speak about the life of one of the earliest human occupants of North America.

Spatial Mobility, Migration, and Living Arrangements

Spatial Mobility, Migration, and Living Arrangements by Can M. Aybek and Johannes Huinink
English | 2014 | ISBN-10: 3319100203 | 246 pages | PDF | 3,2 mb

This book brings together ten original empirical works focusing on the influence of various types of spatial mobility – be it international or national– on partnership, family and work life. The contributions cover a range of important topics which focus on understanding how spatial mobility is related to familial relationships and life course transitions. The volume offers new insights by bringing together the state of the art in theoretical and empirical approaches from spatial mobility and international migration research. This includes, for example, studies that investigate the relationships between international migration and changing patterns of partnership choice, family formation and fertility. Complementing to this, this volume presents new empirical studies on job-related residential mobility and its impact on the relationship quality of couples, family life, and union dissolution. It also highlights the importance of research that looks at the reciprocal relationships between mobility and life course events such as young adults leaving the parental home in international migration context, re-arrangements of family life after divorce and spatial mobility of the elderly following life transitions. The scholarly work included in this volume does not only contribute to theoretical debates but also provide timely empirical evidence from various societies which represent the common features in the dynamics of spatial mobility and migration.

Natural Law in the Spiritual World

Natural Law in the Spiritual World (Cambridge Library Collection – Science and Religion) by Henry Drummond
English | July 20, 2009 | ISBN: 1108000134 | 448 Pages | PDF | 20 MB

Henry Drummond was a Scottish scientist, Free Church minister, explorer and evangelist who became one of the most influential religious figures of the Victorian era. Written as a means of clarifying his own thoughts on the clash between science and religion, Natural Law and the Spiritual World was published in 1883 to great critical acclaim. Entering the debate on science and religion using the basis of law, Drummond sets himself apart by offering ‘a property peculiar neither to science nor religion’. He puts forward the argument that the laws of the natural and spiritual worlds are not completely separate, and explores the connections between them. He concludes by suggesting that the scientific principle of continuity extends from the physical world to the spiritual, offering common ground to people on both sides of the science/religion divide.

The Essential Engineer: Why Science Alone Will Not Solve Our Global Problems

The Essential Engineer: Why Science Alone Will Not Solve Our Global Problems
Audio CDs in MP3 / English: MP3, 96 kb/s (2 ch) | Duration: 08:42:58 | ISBN-10: N/A | ASIN: B0039OZFTA | 2010 | 359 MBGenre: Science, Engineering

From the acclaimed author of The Pencil and To Engineer Is Human, The Essential Engineer is an eye-opening exploration of the ways in which science and engineering must work together to address our world’s most pressing issues, from dealing with climate change and the prevention of natural disasters to the development of efficient automobiles and the search for renewable energy sources.

While the scientist may identify problems, it falls to the engineer to solve them. It is the inherent practicality of engineering, which takes into account structural, economic, environmental, and other factors that science often does not consider, that makes engineering vital to answering our most urgent concerns.
Henry Petroski takes us inside the research, development, and debates surrounding the most critical challenges of our time, exploring the feasibility of biofuels, the progress of battery-operated cars, and the question of nuclear power. He gives us an in-depth investigation of the various options for renewable energy – among them solar, wind, tidal, and ethanol – explaining the benefits and risks of each. Will windmills soon populate our landscape the way they did in previous centuries? Will synthetic trees, said to be more efficient at absorbing harmful carbon dioxide than real trees, soon dot our prairies? Will we construct a sunshade in outer space to protect ourselves from dangerous rays? In many cases, the technology already exists. Whats needed is not so much invention as engineering.
Just as the great achievements of centuries past – the steamship, the airplane, the moon landin – once seemed beyond reach, the solutions to the 21st century’s problems await only a similar coordination of science and engineering. Eloquently reasoned and written, The Essential Engineer identifies and illuminates these problems and, above all, sets out a course for putting ideas into action.

Mark Deakins (Narrator)

Natural Born Heroes: How a Daring Band of Misfits Mastered the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance

Natural Born Heroes: How a Daring Band of Misfits Mastered the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance by Christopher McDougall
English | 2015 | ISBN: 0307594963, 178125012X | 352 pages | EPUB | 5,5 MB

The best-selling author of Born to Run now travels to the Mediterranean, where he discovers that the secrets of ancient Greek heroes are still alive and well on the island of Crete, and ready to be unleashed in the muscles and minds of casual athletes and aspiring heroes everywhere.
After running an ultramarathon through the Copper Canyons of Mexico, Christopher McDougall finds his next great adventure on the razor-sharp mountains of Crete, where a band of Resistance fighters in World War II plotted the daring abduction of a German general from the heart of the Nazi occupation. How did a penniless artist, a young shepherd, and a playboy poet believe they could carry out such a remarkable feat of strength and endurance, smuggling the general past thousands of Nazi pursuers, with little more than their own wits and courage to guide them?
McDougall makes his way to the island to find the answer and retrace their steps, experiencing firsthand the extreme physical challenges the Resistance fighters and their local allies faced. On Crete, the birthplace of the classical Greek heroism that spawned the likes of Herakles and Odysseus, McDougall discovers the tools of the hero—natural movement, extraordinary endurance, and efficient nutrition. All of these skills, McDougall learns, are still practiced in far-flung pockets throughout the world today.
More than a mystery of remarkable people and cunning schemes, Natural Born Heroes is a fascinating investigation into the lost art of the hero, taking us from the streets of London at midnight to the beaches of Brazil at dawn, from the mountains of Colorado to McDougall’s own backyard in Pennsylvania, all places where modern-day athletes are honing ancient skills so they’re ready for anything.
Just as Born to Run inspired readers to get off the treadmill, out of their shoes, and into the natural world, Natural Born Heroes will inspire them to leave the gym and take their fitness routine to nature—to climb, swim, skip, throw, and jump their way to their own heroic feats.

Stradivari's Genius: Five Violins, One Cello, and Three Centuries of Enduring Perfection

Stradivari’s Genius: Five Violins, One Cello, and Three Centuries of Enduring Perfection by Toby Faber
English | Apr 4, 2006 | ISBN: 0375760857 | 288 Pages | EPUB | 4 MB

Antonio Stradivari (1644—1737) was a perfectionist whose single-minded pursuit of excellence changed the world of music. In the course of his long career in the northern Italian city of Cremona, he created more than a thousand stringed instruments; approximately six hundred survive, their quality unequalled by any subsequent violin-maker. In this fascinating book, Toby Faber traces the rich, multilayered stories of six of these peerless creations–five violins and a cello–and the one towering artist who brought them into being. Blending history, biography, meticulous detective work, and an abiding passion for music, Faber takes us from the salons of Vienna to the concert halls of New York, and from the breakthroughs of Beethoven’s last quartets to the first phonographic recordings. This magnificent narrative invites us to share the life, the intrigue, and the incomparable beauty of the world’s most marvelous stringed instruments.

Surveys 400 years of India’s history, from the 16th century to the end of the British Empire

Development of Normal Fetal Movements: The Last 15 Weeks of Gestation

Development of Normal Fetal Movements: The Last 15 Weeks of Gestation by Alessandra Piontelli
English | 2015 | ISBN-10: 8847053722 | 145 pages | pdf | 10,5 mb

In the later stages of gestation, fetal functions undergo increasing change and development, preparing the fetus for the transition to its postnatal environment. Rapid maturation is witnessed in breathing, swallowing, sensory functions, sleep, and many other processes, with corresponding behavioral changes. By 35 to 40 weeks of gestation, fetuses are capable of living ex utero without support, but it is increasingly appreciated that even infants born at between 35 and 36 weeks can suffer long-term consequences. This book, which complements the author’s previous volume on development of normal fetal movements during the first 25 weeks of gestation, discusses in detail the full range of behavioral phenomena observed during the final 15 weeks of gestation, with careful analysis of their mutual relationships. A key feature is the outstanding photographic material, difficult to obtain at this late stage, and the instructive graphs that are also included. The information provided will alert clinicians to deviations from the norm and to physiologic phenomena that can turn pathologic in infants born prematurely.

China on Screen: Cinema and Nation

China on Screen: Cinema and Nation (Film and Culture Series) by Christopher J. Berry PhD
English | 2006 | ISBN: 0231137079 | PDF | 336 pages | 4 MB

In China on Screen, Chris Berry and Mary Farquhar, leaders in the field of Chinese film studies, explore more than one hundred years of Chinese cinema and nation. Providing new perspectives on key movements, themes, and filmmakers, Berry and Farquhar analyze the films of a variety of directors and actors, including Chen Kaige, Zhang Yimou, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung, Gong Li, Wong Kar-wai, and Ang Lee.
They argue for the abandonment of “national cinema” as an analytic tool and propose “cinema and the national” as a more productive framework. With this approach, they show how movies from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora construct and contest different ideas of Chinese nation — as empire, republic, or ethnicity, and complicated by gender, class, style, transnationalism, and more. Among the issues and themes covered are the tension between operatic and realist modes, male and female star images, transnational production and circulation of Chinese films, the image of the good foreigner — all related to different ways of imagining nation. Comprehensive and provocative, China on Screen is a crucial work of film analysis.

Based on a series of lectures for adult students, this lively and entertaining book proves that, far from being a dusty, dull subject, geometry is in fact full of beauty and fascination. The author’s infectious enthusiasm is put to use in explaining many of the key concepts in the field, starting with the Golden Number and taking the reader on a geometrical journey via Shapes and Solids, through the Fourth Dimension, finishing up with Einstein’s Theories of Relativity. Aimed at a general readership, the text makes accessible complex subjects such as Chaos and Fractals. It includes a wealth of the author’s own illustrations and features appendices on related topics. Equally suitable as a gift for a youngster or as a nostalgic journey back into the world of mathematics for older readers, John Barnes’ book is the perfect antidote for anyone whose maths lessons at school are a source of painful memories. Where once geometry was a source of confusion and frustration, Barnes brings enlightenment and entertainment.

Proceedings of the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy, Volume XXIII, 2007 by John J. Cleary and Gary M. Gurtler
English | 2008 | ISBN: 9004166858, 9004166866 | 231 pages | PDF | 1,4 MB

With one notable exception, this volume contains papers and commentaries presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the academic year 2006-7. That exception is the colloquium in which Alasdair MacIntyre offers a fresh reading of Plato’s “Republic”. Indeed, most of the papers included in this volume discuss a wide range of topics related to Plato, for instance, the dangers of misology in the “Phaedo”, the Socratic use of rhetoric in the “Gorgias”, Plato’s anti-hedonism in the “Philebus”, the link between mythical and logical thinking in the Symposium, and Heidegger’s interpretation of Plato’s concept of truth. But, apart from this obsession with Plato, there are two colloquia devoted to the Epicurean notion of preconception and to the Stoic conception of the good, respectively.

Science and Conscience: The Life of James Franck

Jost Lemmerich, “Science and Conscience: The Life of James Franck”
2011 | ISBN-10: 0804763100 | 392 pages | PDF | 9 MB

James Franck (1882–1964) was one of the twentieth century’s most respected scientists, known both for his contributions to physics and for his moral courage. During the 1920s, Franck was a prominent figure in the German physics community. His research into the structure of the atom earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1925. After the Nazis seized power in 1933, Franck resigned his professorship at Gottingen in protest against anti-Jewish policies. He soon emigrated to the United States, where, at the University of Chicago, he began innovative research into photosynthesis.
When the Second World War began, Franck was recruited for the Manhattan Project. With Enrico Fermi and Leo Szilard, he created a controlled nuclear chain reaction which led to the creation of a nuclear weapon. During the final months of the war, however, Franck grew concerned about the consequences of using such a weapon. He became the principal author of the celebrated “Franck Report,” which urged Truman not to use the atomic bomb and warned that a nuclear arms race against the Soviet Union would be an inevitable result. After the War, Franck turned his attention back to photosynthesis; his discoveries influenced chemistry as well as physics.

Frames of Meaning: The Social Construction of Extraordinary Science

H M & T J Collins & Pinch, “Frames of Meaning: The Social Construction of Extraordinary Science”
2008 | ISBN-10: 0415474566 | 224 pages | PDF | 10 MB

Originally published in 1982. Taking a radical interpretation of the Kuhnian concept of paradigm incommensurability, the authors begin by discussing the difficulties of gaining access to the ideas of communities with different rational categories, and then define the subject area of parapsychology, offering a review of the relevant literature. After exploring parapsychology’s compatibility with science, physics, psychology and quantum theory, the authors move on from this predominantly theoretical framework, and devote the middle section to an empirical study of metal bending. They conclude with an examination of the results, analyse diverse interpretations and investigate the consequences for the idea of scientific revolution.

Advances in Modelling and Control of Non-integer-Order Systems: 6th Conference on Non-integer Order Calculus...

Advances in Modelling and Control of Non-integer-Order Systems: 6th Conference on Non-integer Order Calculus and Its Applications, 2014 Opole, Poland (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering) by Krzysztof J. Latawiec and Marian Lukaniszyn
English | 2014 | ISBN-10: 3319098993 | 295 pages | pdf | 7,4 mb

This volume presents selected aspects of non-integer, or fractional order systems, whose analysis, synthesis and applications have increasingly become a real challenge for various research communities, ranging from science to engineering. The spectrum of applications of the fractional order calculus has incredibly expanded, in fact it would be hard to find a science/engineering-related subject area where the fractional calculus had not been incorporated. The content of the fractional calculus is ranged from pure mathematics to engineering implementations and so is the content of this volume. The volume is subdivided into six parts, reflecting particular aspects of the fractional order calculus. The first part contains a single invited paper on a new formulation of fractional-order descriptor observers for fractional-order descriptor continous LTI systems. The second part provides new elements to the mathematical theory of fractional-order systems. In the third part of this volume, a bunch of new results in approximation, modeling and simulations of fractional-order systems is given. The fourth part presents new solutions to some problems in controllability and control of non-integer order systems, in particular fractional PID-like control. The fifth part analyzes the stability of non-integer order systems and some new results are offered in this important respect, in particular for discrete-time systems. The final, sixth part of this volume presents a spectrum of applications of the noninteger order calculus, ranging from bi-fractional filtering, in particular of electromyographic signals, through the thermal diffusion and advection diffusion processes to the SIEMENS platform implementation. This volume’s papers were all subjected to stimulating comments and discussions from the active audience of the RRNR’2014, the 6th Conference on Non-integer Order Calculus and Its Applications that was organized by the Department of Electrical, Control and Computer Engineering, Opole University of Technology, Opole, Poland.

Bayesian Hierarchical Space-Time Models with Application to Significant Wave Height

Erik Vanem – Bayesian Hierarchical Space-Time Models with Application to Significant Wave Height
Published: 2013-10-28 | ISBN: 3642302521 | PDF | 262 pages | 6.14 MB
This book provides an example of a thorough statistical treatment of ocean wave data in space and time. It demonstrates how the flexible framework of Bayesian hierarchical space-time models can be applied to oceanographic processes such as significant wave height in order to describe dependence structures and uncertainties in the data. This monograph is a research book and it is partly cross-disciplinary. The methodology itself is firmly rooted in the statistical research tradition, based on probability theory and stochastic processes. However, that methodology has been applied to a problem in the field of physical oceanography, analyzing data for significant wave height, which is of crucial importance to ocean engineering disciplines. Indeed, the statistical properties of significant wave height are important for the design, construction and operation of ships and other marine and coastal structures. Furthermore, the book addresses the question of whether climate change has an effect of the ocean wave climate, and if so what that effect might be. Thus, this book is an important contribution to the ongoing debate on climate change, its implications and how to adapt to a changing climate, with a particular focus on the maritime industries and the marine environment. This book should be of value to anyone with an interest in the statistical modelling of environmental processes, and in particular to those with an interest in the ocean wave climate. It is written on a level that should be understandable to everyone with a basic background in statistics or elementary mathematics, and an introduction to some basic concepts is provided in the appendices for the uninitiated reader. The intended readership includes students and professionals involved in statistics, oceanography, ocean engineering, environmental research, climate sciences and risk assessment. Moreover, the book’s findings are relevant for various stakeholders in the maritime industries such as design offices, classification societies, ship owners, yards and operators, flag states and intergovernmental agencies such as the IMO.

Luciana Littizzetto – Sola come un gambo di Sedano
Italian | Mondadori | 2001 | EPUB | Pages 232 | ASIN: B005ELY83A | 1.51 Mb

Past and Present Interactions in Legal Reasoning and Logic

Past and Present Interactions in Legal Reasoning and Logic
Springer | Philosophy | June 14, 2015 | ISBN-10: 3319160206 | 270 pages | pdf | 2.9 mb

by Matthias Armgardt (Editor), Patrice Canivez (Editor), Sandrine Chassagnard-Pinet (Editor)
From the Back Cover
This volume explores the relation between legal reasoning and logic from both a historical and a systematic perspective. The topics addressed include, among others, conditional legal acts, disjunctions in legal acts, presumptions and conjectures, conflicts of values, Jørgensen´s Dilemma, the Rhetor´s Dilemma, the theory of legal fictions, and the categorization of contracts. The unifying problematic of these contributions concerns the conditional structures and, more particularly, the relationship between legal theory and legal reasoning in the context of conditions.
The contributions in this work constitute the first results of the ANR-DFG joint research project “JuriLog” (Jurisprudence and Logic), which aims at fostering the cooperation between legal scholars and philosophers. On the one hand, lawyers and legal scholars have an interest in emphasizing the logical character of legal reasoning. In this respect, the present enquiry examines the question of how logic, especially newer forms of dialogical logic, can be made fruitful as a significant area of philosophy for jurisprudence and legal practice. On the other hand, logicians find in legal reasoning a striving towards clear definitions and inference-procedures that is relevant to their discipline. In order to fully understand such reciprocal relationships, it is necessary to bridge the gap between law, logic and philosophy in contemporary academic research. The essays collected in this volume all work towards this common goal.
The book is divided in three sections. In the first part, the strong relation between Roman Law and logic is explored with respect to the analysis of disjunctive statements in legal acts. The second part focuses on Leibniz´s legal theory. The third part, finally, is dedicated to current interactions between law and logic.
About the AuthorMatthias Armgardt is Full Professor of Civil Law, Ancient History of Law, Roman Law and Modern Private Law at the University of Konstanz, where he currently also holds the position of Prorector for Teaching. His research areas include Roman Law, Talmudic Law, Leibniz´s philosophy and logic of law, as well as European Private Law. Since 2012 he is P.I. of the DFG-ANR research project JuriLog (Jurisprudence and Logic) together with Shahid Rahman (Université de Lille 3).
Patrice Canivez is Full Professor of Moral and Political Philosophy, Director of the Department of Philosophy, Director of the Eric Weil Institute at the University of Lille 3 and member of the Société Française de Philosophie. Together with M. Crubellier he is editor of the series “Philosophy” at the Presses Universitaires du Septentrion (Lille). He has published books and articles on Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Rousseau, Hannah Arendt, Paul Ricoeur, Eric Weil and on problems of contemporary political philosophy.

Napoleon’s Carabiniers (Osprey Men-at-Arms 405)

Napoleon’s Carabiniers (Osprey Men-at-Arms 405)
Osprey Publishing | 2005 | ISBN: 1841767093 | English | 50 Pages | True PDF | 3 MB
The two privileged regiments of Carabiniers survived the French Revolution with their elite status intact. They covered themselves with glory at Austerlitz, Friedland, Ratisbonne and Wagram – where their bloody losses shocked Napoleon into ordering them new helmets and cuirasses. Re-formed after near annihilation in Russia in 1812, they fought at Leipzig and in many actions of the 1814 French campaign, and made one of the final charges at Waterloo. lllustrated with rare early prints and meticulous colour reconstructions, this book details their story, and their unique uniforms, from surviving period documents.

Statistical Physics of Non-Thermal Phase Transitions

Statistical Physics of Non-Thermal Phase Transitions: From Foundations to Applications
Springer | Physics | July 12, 2015 | ISBN-10: 3319124684 | 497 pages | pdf | 23.65 mb

by Sergey G. Abaimov (Author)
From the Back Cover
Statistical physics can be used to better understand non-thermal complex systems―phenomena such as stock-market crashes, revolutions in society and in science, fractures in engineered materials and in the Earth’s crust, catastrophes, traffic jams, petroleum clusters, polymerization, self-organized criticality and many others exhibit behaviors resembling those of thermodynamic systems. In particular, many of these systems possess phase transitions identical to critical or spinodal phenomena in statistical physics. The application of the well-developed formalism of statistical physics to non-thermal complex systems may help to predict and prevent such catastrophes as earthquakes, snow-avalanches and landslides, failure of engineering structures, or economical crises.
This book addresses the issue step-by-step, from phenomenological analogies between complex systems and statistical physics to more complex aspects, such as correlations, fluctuation-dissipation theorem, susceptibility, the concept of free energy, renormalization group approach and scaling. Fractals and multifractals, the Ising model, percolation, damage phenomena, critical and spinodal phase transitions, crossover effects and finite-size effects are some of the topics covered in Statistical Physics of Non-Thermal Phase Transitions.

Osprey Publishing | 2014 | ISBN: 1782009280 | English | 66 Pages | True PDF | 4 MB
New archaeological material and research underpins this extensive, detailed and beautifully illustrated account of the famous Mamluk Askars who are credited with finally defeating and expelling the Crusaders, halting the Mongol invasion of the Islamic Middle East, and facing down Tamerlane. Probably the ultimate professional soldiers of the medieval period they were supposedly recruited as adolescent slaves, though recent research has begun to undermine this oversimplified interpretation of what has been called the “Mamluk phenomenon”.
