Johannes H.P. Hackstein - (Endo)symbiotic Methanogenic Archaea
Published: 2010-09-09 | ISBN: 3642136141, 3642264956 | PDF | 238 pages | 4.7 MB

Methanogens are prokaryotic microorganisms that produce methane as an
end-product of a complex biochemical pathway. They are strictly anaerobic
archaea and occupy a wide variety of anoxic environments. Methanogens also
thrive in the cytoplasm of anaerobic unicellular eukaryotes and in the
gastrointestinal tracts of animals and humans. The symbiotic methanogens in the
gastrointestinal tracts of ruminants and other "methanogenic" mammals
contribute significantly to the global methane budget. This monograph deals with
methanogenic endosymbionts of anaerobic protists, in particular ciliates and
termite flagellates, and with methanogens in the gastrointestinal tracts of
vertebrates and arthropods. Further reviews discuss the genomic consequences of
living together in symbiotic associations, the role of methanogens in syntrophic
degradation, and the function and evolution of hydrogenosomes,
hydrogen-producing organelles of certain anaerobic protists.

Hans Liljenström - Advances in Cognitive Neurodynamics (IV)
Published: 2015-01-16 | ISBN: 9401795479 | PDF | 618 pages | 20.02 MB

This volume is the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Cognitive
Neurodynamics (ICCN2013) held in Sweden in 2013. The included papers reflect the
large span of research presented and are grouped in ten parts that are organized
essentially in a top-down structure. The first parts deal with
social/interactive (I) and mental (II) aspects of brain functions and their
relation to perception and cognition (III). Next, more specific aspects of
sensory systems (IV) and neural network dynamics of brain functions (V),
including the effects of oscillations, synchronization and synaptic plasticity
(VI), are addressed, followed by papers particularly emphasizing the use of
neural computation and information processing (VII). With the next two parts,
the levels of cellular and intracellular processes (VIII) and finally quantum
effects (IX) are reached. The last part (X) is devoted to the contributions
invited by the Dynamic Brain Forum (DBF), which was co-organized with ICCN2013.

Geoffrey Scarre - Utilitarianism
Published: 1996-06-26 | ISBN: 0415121973, 0415095271 | PDF | 240 pages | 0.72
MB

Surveying the historical development and the present condition of utilitarian
ethics, Geoffrey Scarre examines the major philosophers from Lao Tzu in the
fifth century BC to Richard Hare in the twentieth.
Utilitarianism traces the 'doctrine of utility' from the moralists of the
ancient world, through the Enlightenment and Victorian utilitarianism up to the
lively debate of the present day. Utilitarianism today faces challenges on
several fronts: it cannot warrant the drawing of adequate protective boundaries
around the essential interests of individuals, and it does not allow them the
space to pursue the personal concerns which give meaning to their lives.
Geoffrey Scarre considers these and other charges, and concludes that whilst
utilitarianism may not be a faultless moral doctrine, its positions are
relevant, and significant today.
Written with undergraduates in mind, this is an ideal course book for those
studying and those teaching moral philosophy.

Jeffrey Eugenides - Le vergini suicide
Mondadori | 2008 | ISBN: 8804583614 | 200 pages | EPUB | 3 MB

personali.

In These Times: Living in Britain Through Napoleon's Wars, 1793-1815 By Jenny
Uglow
2015 | 752 Pages | ISBN: 0374280908 | EPUB | 23 MB

'The sharply-observed characters and constant pricks of humour make this book
seem almost as if Jane Austen had written a history of her own times.' Lucy
Worsley The Times
We know the thrilling, terrible stories of the battles of the Napoleonic wars -
but what of those left behind? The people on a Norfolk farm, in a Yorkshire
mill, a Welsh iron foundry, an Irish village, a London bank or a Scottish
mountain? The aristocrats and paupers, old and young, butchers and bakers and
candlestick makers - how did the war touch their lives?
Every part of Britain felt the long twenty years of war against the French: one
in five families had people in the services and over 300,000 men died. As the
years passed, so the bullish, flamboyant figure of Napoleon - Boney, the
bogeyman - came to dominate so much that the whole long conflict was given his
name.
Jenny Uglow, the prize-winning author of The Lunar Men and Nature's Engraver,
follows the gripping back-and-forth of the first global war, but turns the news
upside down, seeing how it reached the people. Illustrated by the satires of
Gillray, Rowlandson and the paintings of Turner and Constable, and combining the
familiar voices of Jane Austen, Wordsworth, Scott and Byron with others lost in
the crowd, In These Times delves into the archives to tell the moving story of
how people lived and loved and sang and wrote, struggling through hard times and
opening new horizons that would change their country for a century ahead.
